Rights & ownership
Briefs on Tolokit are practice: the work belongs to the people who made it. This page says who may do what with it, so nobody has to argue about it later.
You keep what you make
Each member keeps the copyright in their own contribution — the code they wrote, the designs they drew, the words they wrote. Tolokit owns none of it.
Work made together (a shared Figma file, a repository several people committed to) is owned jointly by the members who contributed to it.
Showing the work
By joining a crew, every member agrees that every other member of that crew may:
- show the whole project in their portfolio, CV, social posts and job applications, with credit to the crew;
- describe their own role in it;
- keep a copy of the files for that purpose.
Using the work after the crew
Turning the project into a product, selling it or licensing it to someone else needs the agreement of everyone whose work is in it. The simplest way: agree on a licence in the crew chat before you start — for code, an open licence such as MIT is a good default.
What Tolokit may do
When a crew publishes a project page, the crew gives Tolokit a free, non-exclusive licence to show that page — its title, text, images and links — on Tolokit and when promoting Tolokit, with credit to the crew. Unpublish the page and we stop showing it.
Other people's material
Use only fonts, images, music and code you are allowed to use, and keep their licences. Briefs mention real kinds of businesses, not real clients: don't present a practice brief as work for a real company that never asked for it.
Paid briefs
Paid briefs aren't open yet. When they are, each one will state its own terms, and they will take precedence over this page for that brief.
